Hey everyone - just a note to let you know that I was hit with a death threat email.

Yup - you heard right. I figured it was a scam, but contacted the RCMP anyways. I will give a summary of the contents:

It said that there was a contract on my head and to ensure the safety of myself and my family I had to reply for instructions and not contact the police or really bad things would happen immediately as they were watching my every move.

So -- naturally I contacted the authorities and so should you if you get one of these.

I am looking into laying charges, if possible, against them whomever owns that ip and email addy. I will know more on Tue or Wed when an officer gets back to me.

It may be a scam of sorts, but this takes things to a whole new level and needs to be stopped!

definitely not kidding sed ....it came from a gmail addy. And I have taken action ... waiting to hear from the RCMP as to what steps to take next. I will lay charges if at all possible because this goes so way beyond spam.

Even though it is most likely a hoax and an attempt to extort monies, it gave me the same uneasiness I had after our home was broken into a few years ago.

I'll be very interested to find out how this all turns out. I guess that you didn't reply--I wouldn't be surprised if there's a virus/trojan at the other end. Good luck, Betty.

So - heard from the RCMP ... and it has been reported to the Canadian Online fraud center.

SO .. if anyone gets something like this ... report it! In Canada go to Project Phone Busters get the addy and attach a copy of the email. It will be added to their watch list and the ip will be shut down if possible.

Most of these scams are from Cameroon, and harder than heck to track down, but if we ignore them, they will just keep on and use even more intimidating tactics.

I used to think the net was an amazing tool and would help bridge cultural gaps, but it has shown a very dark underside - cyber crime, bullying and harassment. Makes me want to unplug permanently.

No death threats, but I keep getting one that says that a direct deposit has been refused, despite not having an account to direct deposit anything to.
